Bob Cartin, DVM

Dr CartinDr. Bob Cartin developed his love for animals while growing up in New York.  One of his earliest memories is his father asking him, "Are you sure that you wouldn't want to be a Real Doctor instead of a Dog Doctor?"

After completing his veterinary education at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979, he practiced in Costa Mesa, California for two years before purchasing a veterinary hospital in Denver.  He came to Mission Animal & Bird Hospital in 1988.  He lives in Oceanside with the love of his life, Melodee, and their two children, Mackenzie and Griffin.  They share their home with Clifford (their retriever of thirteen years), Danny (their adopted thirteen pounds of canine fluff of unknown and questionable ancestry), Squeakers (their Domestic Short Hair Cat who allows the rest of the family to live in his house) and some finned friends.  In 2009, sadly, the Cartin's lost ZaZu (their 15 year old diabetic Cockatiel) and Eddie, the blind rat, who past on due to old age.

Dr. Cartin enjoys spending time with family and pets, traveling, running and all types of sports.  He is the longest serving member on the board of directors for Canine Companions for Independence (SW Region) www.cci.org/southwest/index.html.  From 2005 - 2009, he has served on the Oceanside Unified School District's Bond Oversight Committee.  From 1989 to 1993, Dr. Bob was a member of the North County Humane Society and SPCA's Board of Directors.

Recently, he added the title “Coach” to his resume, as he became assistant coach to the El Camino High School Cross Country Team.  He is also a proud supporter of ECHS Track, Baseball, and Orchestra, as well as a supporter of all of ECHS teachers and coaches.

Dr. Bob has spent a great deal of time over the past several years, planning and developing the new facility, which is now the home of Mission Animal & Bird Hospital as well as Bark Avenue Resort & Kamp.  The new state-of-the-art 11,000 sq. ft. hospital, resort, Doggie Day Kamp and spa opened in November, 2009.

Nearly fifty years after first hearing the Real Doctor question, both Dr. Bob and his Dad are glad that he decided to become a Dog Doctor.
